Settlement Agreements: How Much Does Legal Advice Cost?

You have to take independent legal advice before you sign the settlement agreement* you’ve been offered by your employer. It’s the law. So you might wonder how much it’s going to cost you.

If your case is straightforward, and you’re more or less happy to accept the settlement agreement as it is, the legal costs will probably total around £250 to £500 + VAT.

But don’t worry. You probably won’t have to pay a penny of this, because, in most cases, your employer will pay your legal costs in full.

Look out for a clause in your settlement agreement to confirm this.

If you want to negotiate a better deal with your employer, it might cost a bit more. In that case, your employer’s contribution might not be enough to cover the extra.

If this applies to you, we’ll let you know in advance. And if it does, you can choose between a few different ways to pay:

  • No win, no fee: You don’t have to pay anything unless you win
  • Your own home/motor insurance: If your home or motor insurance policy includes legal expenses, you can claim on that to cover our fees. We’ll speak to your insurer for you. They will probably insist that you go through your employer’s formal grievance procedure first (we can help with that). Note that they might try to insist you use a solicitor of their choice. But that’s not true. You can choose any solicitor you wish.
  • Fixed fee package: You can choose from our range of fixed fee packages so you can budget with no surprises
  • Hourly rate: You only pay for the work that’s actually done. We carefully record the time we spend on your case, and invoice you regularly.
